Japanese Level 1 - Block A
What’s Included:
This “Block A” class covers Lessons 1-10 in our FLY Level 1 Curriculum. In each Lesson, students will learn 10 vocabulary words, a question/answer dialogue segment, and a cultural fact. Subjects included in Lessons 1-10 are:
• Greetings & People
• Numbers to 20
• Feelings
• Colors
• Parts of the body
• Calendar
Total Vocabulary Words Introduced: 100
Total Dialogue Segments Introduced: 21
Continuing Learning Options:
FLY’s Level 1 Curriculum includes a total of 40 Lessons. This Block A covers Lessons 1-10. After finishing Block A, your student can continue on to Block B to cover Lessons 11-20 of the FLY Level 1 Curriculum.
Participants must be entering grades 5 to 8.
Japanese Level 1 - Block B
Pre-requisite for this class is Japanese Level 1 - Block A

This “Block B” class covers Lessons 11-20 in our FLY Level 1 Curriculum. In each Lesson, students will learn 10 vocabulary words, a question/answer dialogue segment, and a cultural fact. Subjects included in Lessons 11-20 are:
• Weather & Seasons
• Clothes & Shopping
• Food
• Home & Restaurant Dining
• Numbers to 100
Total Vocabulary Words Introduced: 100
Total Dialogue Segments Introduced: 20
Continuing Learning Options:
FLY’s Level 1 Curriculum includes a total of 40 Lessons. This Block B covers Lessons 11-20. After finishing Block B, your student can continue on to Block C to cover Lessons 21-30 of the FLY Level 1 Curriculum.
Participants must be entering grades 5 to 8.

This “Block C” class covers Lessons 21-30 in our FLY Level 1 Curriculum. In each Lesson, students will learn 10 vocabulary words, a question/answer dialogue segment, and a cultural fact. Subjects included in Lessons 21-30 are:

Total Dialogue Segments Introduced: 20
Continuing Learning Options:
FLY’s Level 1 Curriculum includes a total of 40 Lessons. This Block C covers Lessons 21-30. After finishing Block C, your student can continue on to Block D to cover Lessons 31-40 of the FLY Level 1 Curriculum.
Participants must be entering grades 5 to 8.

Technical Requirements:
1. Device (personal computer, laptop, tablet, or smartphone) with a camera and speaker
2. FLY uses Canvas for classwork and Microsoft Teams for live classes
Total Weekly Time Commitment: 2-hours
PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL LISTED TIMES ARE IN PACIFIC TIME ZONE.
Each Lesson takes about 1-hour of student time. Since this Block meets twice a week, students will learn two Lessons a week and will have 2-hours of work total per week.
Activities & Live Class:
Established in 1995, Foreign Language for Youth ("FLY") is a non-profit 501c3 organization that teaches Spanish, French, Japanese and Mandarin Chinese to students grades K-8. For 25 years, FLY taught in-person classes in 70% of the school districts throughout Puget Sound. In March 2020, FLY transitioned our curriculums to online and expanded our remote class offerings to students across the United States.
